Mini highland cows feed well on high-quality grass hay and fresh pasture. Due to their tough Scottish bloodlines, mini highland cows can thrive on harsher grass, unlike other breeds. Add a loose cattle mineral and ensuring clean, fresh water is always accessible. Except for pregnant or nursing animals, grain is rarely needed.
The small size of a miniature highland cow is a major benefit. Each animal needs at least half an acre of pasture, but more is better. Their famous double coat provides excellent natural insulation, so a three-sided shelter is generally plenty for winter. Mini highland cows need durable 4-strand barbed wire or wood-post fencing.
